The Boston Celtics confronted a tough match on Tuesday, facing off against a Brooklyn Nets squad struggling this NBA season. Competing at Barclays Center, the Celtics dealt with turnovers, sluggish defense, and foul issues but rallied to clinch a 113-99 victory, marking their record at 8-7 and achieving a winning record for the first time this season.
With a season-high 20 turnovers, Boston's performance was less than stellar. Jaylen Brown's eight turnovers were pivotal, while both Derrick White and Payton Pritchard contributed additional errors. Consequently, the Celtics fell behind in the fourth quarter, only regaining control in the closing moments.
Entering the game with just two wins, the Nets had struggled against lesser competition and ranked low in league standings, especially in defensive metrics. Surprisingly, they matched Boston’s pace, playing with unexpected speed and aggressiveness.
In the first quarter, the Celtics allowed four transition three-pointers. Following a timeout called by Coach Joe Mazzulla while trailing 21-11, the team couldn't slow down Brooklyn’s quick tempo. By halftime, the Nets, who normally score just 8.6 points on the fast break, had already notched 22 transitional points.
Amidst the chaos, Payton Pritchard emerged as a key player, hitting three-pointers, earning free throws, and assisting teammates to end the first quarter tied at 29-29. He concluded the game with 22 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists, including five deep shots.
Despite his high number of turnovers, Jaylen Brown delivered a dominating performance, scoring 29 points on 9-for-19 shooting, notably pouring in 17 points during a critical third-quarter stretch where Boston scored 27 points.
Even though the Celtics showcased efficient shooting at 61% from the field and 52% from deep, their turnover issues significantly hindered their performance. Twelve first-half turnovers allowed Brooklyn to capitalize and score 17 points.
Foul troubles exacerbated the situation, with Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta each picking up four fouls early in the third period. This challenge forced Boston to rely on lesser-used bench players like Josh Minott and Xavier Tillman.
In the fourth quarter, the Nets briefly claimed the lead with a three-pointer from Michael Porter Jr., but the Celtics tightened their defense. Sam Hauser's steal followed by a three-pointer initiated an 8-0 run. Despite recent struggles, Hauser ended up with eight points, seven rebounds, and solid defensive contributions.
Derrick White provided steady influence on both offense and defense, hitting crucial three-pointers and blocking shots to help Boston regain control. His tactical passing was vital in slowing Brooklyn's attacks.
The Nets experienced a challenging stretch, going over seven minutes without a field goal. Jaylen Brown's three-pointer with under three minutes remaining clinched the win for the Celtics.
The Boston Celtics will see the Nets again this Friday for an NBA Cup group stage matchup at TD Garden, followed by a challenging series of games against top playoff contenders.
Despite the win, Boston acknowledges the need to minimize turnovers and sharpen defensive focus. Derrick White emphasized the team's commitment to improvement, stating, “We’ve just got to keep getting better.”
