In a devastating turn of events at Garrapata State Beach in California, a father from Calgary has tragically lost his life, while search efforts continue for his missing five-year-old daughter.
Yuji Hu, aged 39, was enjoying a day at the beach with his wife and two children when a six-meter wave unexpectedly struck, pulling his daughter into the ocean. Attempting to save her, both Hu and his wife were caught in the turbulent waters.
Rescue efforts by a beachgoer and an off-duty park officer successfully brought Hu out of the water, but despite resuscitation attempts, he was pronounced dead in the hospital. His wife survived with mild hypothermia; their two-year-old son emerged uninjured.
The search for the missing girl, last seen in a white shirt, was extensive, involving the Coast Guard, divers, and aerial support. However, after Saturday's search, operations were suspended. Personnel from State Parks continue to comb the shoreline and accessible areas on foot.
