Bracewell-Smith Stand Saves New Zealand on Rain-Hit Day One

Post by : Mina Carter

Michael Bracewell and Nathan Smith combined for a crucial 52-run partnership, rescuing New Zealand after early wickets fell in a rain-hit opening day at Hagley Oval.

Kane Williamson had set the platform with a patient half-century, but once he departed, New Zealand slipped to 148 for 6 in challenging seam-friendly conditions. The lower-order duo added stability, taking the score to 231 for 9 at stumps.

West Indies captain Roston Chase opted to bowl first on a green, overcast pitch. Early breakthroughs came from Kemar Roach, who trapped Devon Conway and set the tone. Rain disrupted play after just 3.3 overs, limiting the first session to 10.3 overs and New Zealand to 17 runs.

Williamson fought back after lunch, scoring boundaries off Johann Layne and navigating the difficult pitch with controlled defense. Debutant Ojay Shields had a mixed day, struggling with no-balls but also picking key wickets, including Williamson and Tom Latham.

The Bracewell-Smith stand revived the innings, with Bracewell playing aggressively while Smith defended expertly. The partnership ended when Smith was dismissed, followed shortly by Bracewell, Matt Henry, and Jacob Duffy. Duffy was hit on the helmet by a bouncer, prompting a concussion check.

Only 70 overs were possible in the day’s play, with West Indies conceding 23 extras—a factor that could prove decisive in the seaming conditions.
