Family Remembers 10-Year-Old Matilda, Bondi Shooting Victim

Post by : Raina Carter

The family of Matilda, the youngest victim of the tragic Bondi shooting, stood united in grief on Thursday during her emotional farewell. They urged the community to turn their sorrow into love and kindness, rather than anger.

Matilda was tragically among 15 lives taken on Sunday during a horrific shooting at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, leaving a nation in mourning.

Incident Overview

The shooting erupted on Sunday evening, shattering a peaceful communal event. Two gunmen targeted the crowd, and the aftermath was devastating, claiming the lives of several including young children and elderly citizens.

This incident marks Australia’s deadliest attack since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, which resulted in 35 fatalities.

Tributes at Matilda’s Funeral

Sydney hosted Matilda’s funeral on Thursday, attended by an outpouring of mourners including community leaders and friends.

Her aunt, Lina Chernykh, paid tribute to Matilda’s joyful spirit, encouraging attendees to cherish her memory through acts of kindness.

“In memory of my delightful niece, let us choose to spread happiness and love,” she shared. “I hope she watches over us as an angel.”

A Celebration of Love

Mourners adorned themselves with bee-shaped tokens — a nod to Matilda's favorite creature. The somber atmosphere was filled with tears and moments of remembrance.

Matilda’s name, inspired by the beloved Australian song “Waltzing Matilda”, was chosen to symbolize her family’s gratitude for finding refuge in Australia from Ukraine.

Chris Minns, the Premier of New South Wales, recited a poem, remarking, “She is now waltzing among the angels.”

Community Sorrow

During the service, a religious leader expressed the profound pain reflected in the loss of Matilda, conveying, “Her loss feels like losing our own child.” He noted that although healing takes time, the community stands together in their grief.

Matilda’s aunt shared the family’s devastation, acknowledging, “I fear her parents may never experience joy again.” Her younger sister, once inseparable from Matilda, is grappling with confusion and sadness, saying, “She has no tears left.”

Honoring Another Hero

On the same day, family and friends said their goodbyes to Alex Kleytman, an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor who heroically shielded his wife during the attack. His family shared that he passed while embodying his unwavering love for family and faith.

Law Enforcement’s Response

The police have designated the Bondi shooting as a terrorist incident, attributing it to extremist ideologies. Authorities indicated that the attackers, a father and son duo, were responsible for the tragedy. The father was killed on-site, while the son has been detained and faces multiple murder charges.

In light of these tragic events, the government has announced measures to enforce harsher laws against hate crimes, including the ability to revoke visas linked to hate activities.
