The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has unveiled a 15-member squad for the upcoming ACC Men's Under-19 Asia Cup, kicking off on December 12 in Dubai. Ayush Mhatre, a young batter from Mumbai, has been appointed captain, with Vihaan Malhotra stepping in as vice-captain. This tournament will showcase the top youth teams throughout Asia in a one-day format. Alongside Mhatre and Malhotra, talented players such as Vaibhav Suryavanshi enrich the squad, bolstering the batting lineup. This selection emphasizes India’s commitment to nurturing promising talents, including two wicketkeepers, Abhigyan Kundu and Harvansh Singh.

India finds itself in Group A with Pakistan and two qualifier teams, while Group B comprises Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, and another qualifier. The Indian campaign will commence on December 12 against one of the qualifiers.

Despite Mhatre’s captaincy, his recent performance has been a mixed bag. He shone in IPL 2025 with the Chennai Super Kings, stepping in for an injured Ruturaj Gaikwad, where he amassed 240 runs across seven matches, demonstrating an impressive strike rate of nearly 189. His power hitting drew significant attention, establishing him as a leading youth prospect.

Nevertheless, Mhatre faced difficulties maintaining his form during international youth tours, where he scored just 27 runs in four one-day matches in England. He rebounded in the Youth Test series, emerging as the top scorer with 340 runs, showcasing his resilience and versatility.

While touring Australia, Mhatre continued to encounter challenges, recording only 10 runs in three one-day matches and 38 in the Youth Tests. His domestic endeavors were similarly uneven, with only 156 runs in four first-class games, including a match for India A against South Africa A. During the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he tallied 18 runs against Railways.

Despite these fluctuations, selectors have expressed confidence in Mhatre’s leadership and potential. His experience in competitive leagues and international youth series positions him favorably to guide his peers. The Asia Cup provides Mhatre with a vital opportunity to regain his form and affirm his capabilities as both a leader and performer.

The Under-19 Asia Cup has a legacy of uncovering future cricket stars, and India aims to carry forward its strong tradition in this tournament. With a well-rounded squad, the team looks to assert itself this year, capitalizing on its robust bowling attack, experienced all-rounders, and technically adept batsmen.

The squad is composed of Ayush Mhatre (capt), Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Vihaan Malhotra (vice-capt), Vedant Trivedi, Abhigyan Kundu (wk), Harvansh Singh (wk), Yuvraj Gohil, Kanishk Chouhan, Khilan A. Patel, Naman Pushpak, D. Deepesh, Henil Patel, Kishan Kumar Singh, Udhav Mohan, Aaron George.

Facing formidable teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh, India’s young talents will be rigorously tested in Dubai. This tournament will not only showcase their skills but help selectors identify future stars ready for the next steps in their careers.

As Ayush Mhatre embraces his role as captain, the Asia Cup presents a pivotal opportunity to lead India and rebuild his batting confidence. The team’s blend of talent and motivation holds promise for a strong performance in this championship.
