Understanding the Recent Tensions in Aleppo: Syrian Government and Kurdish Forces Reach Agreement

In a significant development, the Syrian government and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have reached an agreement to mitigate tensions in Aleppo following a sudden eruption of violence that resulted in civilian casualties. This decision came late on Monday after a day marked by intense fighting that instilled fear within the city.

Syria’s state news agency reported that the military leadership instructed troops to halt attacks against SDF-held areas. Subsequently, the SDF announced that its members would refrain from retaliatory actions, following diplomatic efforts to stabilize the situation.

The violent confrontations claimed the lives of at least two civilians, according to Syrian health officials, and left numerous individuals injured, including children and civil defense personnel. Residential neighborhoods were shelled, prompting families to take shelter indoors amid the cacophony of explosions.

Both factions exchanged accusations regarding the outbreak of violence. Syrian authorities alleged that the SDF initiated assaults on military and security personnel in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah neighborhoods of Aleppo. Conversely, the SDF countered these claims, asserting that government-affiliated armed groups commenced the attacks, employing tanks and heavy weaponry in civilian zones.

Witness accounts painted a vivid picture of chaos, with residents reporting continuous artillery sounds and observing an extensive military presence throughout the city. One resident described the explosions as deafening and alarming, leading to widespread panic among families.

This flare-up of violence occurred mere hours after Turkey’s foreign minister expressed concerns over the SDF’s failure to meet agreements for incorporation into Syria’s national military by year’s end, indicating potential military repercussions, as Turkey deems the SDF a terrorist organization.

Integrating the SDF remains one of Syria's most contentious issues. This group gained substantial influence during the conflict as a trusted U.S. ally and currently governs vast regions in the northeast, which include critical oil fields and detention facilities for Islamic State members. The SDF harbors fears of losing its independence if fully assimilated into state military forces.

Without a resolution to this impasse, there is a persistent risk of renewed fighting and the involvement of regional powers, notably Turkey. The potential for escalated conflict raises concerns, with many citizens anxious about jeopardizing the fragile progress made after over 14 years of warfare in Syria.

In response to the escalating tensions, Aleppo’s governor has mandated the closure of all public and private schools, universities, and government offices in the city center for Tuesday, arguing that these measures are pivotal for safeguarding civilians and restoring peace.
