Airlines Halt Venezuela Services Following US Safety Advisory

Multiple international airlines have suspended their services to and from Venezuela after a safety advisory released by the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA warned major carriers about a “potentially dangerous scenario” concerning flights over Venezuelan airspace, prompting a reevaluation of routes amid escalating safety concerns.

This alert arises amidst rising tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela, with reports indicating an uptick in military activities in the area. Flight tracking records show that several airlines, such as Gol from Brazil, Avianca from Colombia, LATAM from Chile, Caribbean Airlines from Trinidad and Tobago, and TAP Air Portugal from Portugal, have halted their flights from Caracas. The Simon Bolivar Maiquetia International Airport's official website corroborated these cancellations.

The Colombian Aeronautica Civil issued a statement underlining the “potential dangers” of operating flights in the Maiquetia region due to deteriorating security conditions and an increased military footprint. TAP Air Portugal indicated that its flight cancellations were informed by U.S. aviation sources, which expressed that safety could not be assured over Venezuelan airspace.

The FAA emphasized the “deteriorating security scenario and elevated military activities” in Venezuela, cautioning that such threats could endanger aircraft at all altitudes. This has raised alarms for various international airlines, resulting in significant flight cancellations and rerouted paths to evade the region.

These developments follow a notable increase in U.S. military presences nearby, including the deployment of the Navy’s largest aircraft carrier, additional warships, and advanced fighter aircraft like the F-35. Unnamed U.S. officials indicate these maneuvers form part of a strategic operation focused on Venezuela, with expected covert actions against the government of President Nicolás Maduro.

One official remarked that the U.S. administration is resolved to leverage all resources to disrupt drug trafficking and bring perpetrators to justice. This ongoing situation has intensified the atmosphere and raised further questions regarding the safety of Venezuelan airspace.
