Abu Dhabi Launches Pioneering Modular Smart Vehicles

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a groundbreaking move for urban transportation, Abu Dhabi has unveiled the world’s first modular smart vehicles. These cutting-edge vehicles can connect or separate based on passenger demand, aiming to redefine road travel across the emirate.

The launch, which occurred during DRIFTx 2025 at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Autonomous Systems Week, underscores the city’s ambition to be a leader in advanced mobility solutions. Designed by NExT, these vehicles can adapt to immediate operational requirements, significantly alleviating congestion and lowering carbon footprints without necessitating new infrastructure.

What sets modular smart vehicles apart is their adaptability. They can link together to handle larger groups of passengers or separate for individual trips, thus optimizing traffic flow and providing effective first- and last-mile transport solutions. By adjusting dynamically to user demand, the system aims to improve road efficiency and promote more sustainable transportation approaches.

The initial pilot phase will occur on Yas Island, in collaboration with Emirates Driving Company (EDC), Liftango, and Paradigma Innovation Hub. This trial will demonstrate the practical viability of these vehicles and set the groundwork for wider implementation throughout the city.

In addition to immediate transport enhancements, these vehicles are envisioned as a cornerstone for future intelligent operating systems and autonomous driving technologies, aligning with Abu Dhabi’s long-term strategy for an integrated transport network.

With these modular smart vehicles, Abu Dhabi is not merely reinventing road transport; it is establishing a new international benchmark for adaptable, eco-friendly, and efficient urban mobility.
