Post by : Sophia Matthew

The social media platform X experienced a global outage on April 20, 2026, affecting thousands of users worldwide. According to outage tracking platform Downdetector, more than 14,000 users reported issues accessing the service.

The disruption began around 1705 GMT, with users facing problems across different parts of the platform. Many reported that their feeds and timelines were not loading properly, while others experienced difficulties using the mobile application or accessing the website.

Data shared by Downdetector showed that nearly 48 percent of the complaints were related to feed and timeline issues. Around 33 percent of users reported problems with the app, and 12 percent faced issues with the website itself. These numbers highlight that the outage affected multiple functions of the platform at the same time.

Downdetector collects its data based on reports submitted by users, which means the actual number of affected users could be significantly higher than reported. Outages like this often impact a wider audience than initial figures suggest.

As of now, there has been no detailed official explanation from the company regarding the cause of the outage. It is also unclear how long the disruption lasted for users in different regions.

Such outages can affect communication, news sharing, and business activities, as millions of people rely on X for real-time updates and social interaction. Users typically turn to other platforms to report issues during such disruptions, increasing visibility of the problem.

Overall, the incident highlights the challenges faced by large digital platforms in maintaining uninterrupted global services and the widespread impact outages can have when they occur.
