The ongoing partial government shutdown in the United States has officially become the longest in the nation’s history, as political disagreements over funding continue in Washington. The shutdown has now crossed 44 days, surpassing all previous records and creating serious disruptions across several sectors.
The crisis is mainly linked to a funding dispute over the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), which includes key agencies such as airport security and immigration enforcement. Lawmakers from both major political parties have failed to reach an agreement, leaving many government operations partially closed.
One of the most visible impacts has been at airports, where long security lines and delays have become common. A shortage of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers has made the situation worse, as many workers are going without pay during the shutdown. Reports indicate that some employees have stopped reporting to work, while others have resigned due to financial pressure.
Donald Trump has said that efforts are being made to ensure TSA workers receive their salaries soon. He signed an order aimed at releasing funds to support these workers temporarily. However, experts warn that such actions may face legal challenges, as government spending must be approved by Congress under the U.S. Constitution.
Meanwhile, additional support has been provided by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), with agents deployed at airports to assist with operations. Officials have said ICE personnel will remain in place until airport conditions return to normal and enough TSA staff are back on duty.
Despite these temporary measures, there is still no clear solution to end the shutdown. The conflict between Republicans and Democrats continues, with disagreements over immigration policies and funding priorities. Congress is currently on a break, further delaying any immediate resolution.
The prolonged shutdown has not only affected government workers but also travellers across the country. Long queues at airports, flight delays, and uncertainty have raised concerns about the country’s ability to manage large-scale events and maintain smooth operations.
As the situation continues, pressure is increasing on lawmakers to reach a compromise and restore normal government functioning. Until then, the shutdown remains a major challenge for both the administration and the public.
