The third Asian Youth Games officially launched on Wednesday at the Bahrain International Exhibition Centre, under the auspices of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa of Bahrain. H.H. Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, was present at the opening, symbolizing the UAE's involvement. The Games are set to run until October 31, 2025.
Welcoming H.H. Sheikh Mansoor and the heads of participating delegations at Al Sakhir Palace, His Majesty King Hamad expressed his congratulations on the Games' commencement. Upon his arrival at Bahrain International Airport, Sheikh Mansoor received a warm welcome from H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the First Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and the Bahrain Olympic Committee President.
The opening festivities were graced by the presence of UAE officials, including Dr. Ahmed Belhoul Al Falasi, Minister of Sports and Vice President of the UAE National Olympic Committee, and the UAE Ambassador to Bahrain, Fahad Mohammed Salem bin Kardous Al Ameri, along with other esteemed officials.
Kicking off the ceremony was Bahrain’s national anthem, complemented by performances that showcased the nation’s vibrant heritage. Sheikh Mansoor acknowledged the UAE delegation as they paraded in alignment behind the UAE flag, which was carried by Ali Al Kaabi from the national triathlon team and Sheikha Al Ketbi representing the taekwondo team. True to tradition, the UAE team participated in a flag-raising ceremony prior to the onset of competitive events.
During the ceremony, Sheikh Mansoor inspired the UAE athletes by stating that wearing the national colors and seeking excellence constitutes the highest honor. He reiterated that the UAE leadership’s unwavering support for young athletes amplifies their access to guidance and resources for successful endeavors. This event also serves as a preparatory stage for the upcoming Youth Olympics in Dakar, Senegal, set for the following year.
In a novel approach, the opening ceremony was held indoors this year, catering to over 5,000 athletes representing 45 nations across 26 sports. Sheikh Mansoor expressed his appreciation toward the Bahrain organizing committee for their exemplary facilities and hosting capabilities.
The UAE's contingent boasts 152 athletes, comprising 107 men and 45 women, who are actively competing in 19 sports. These encompass handball, 3x3 basketball, equestrian, athletics, swimming, cycling, boxing, Muay Thai, e-sports, weightlifting, triathlon, taekwondo, table tennis, camel racing, badminton, golf, judo, jiu-jitsu, and mixed martial arts.
The competitive spirit is already palpable, as evidenced by the UAE national handball team's recent success — a 35-27 win against Kazakhstan in their second tournament match. Athletes in equestrian, athletics, Muay Thai, basketball, triathlon, taekwondo, golf, boxing, and MMA arrived on Tuesday, greeted by members of the UAE National Olympic Committee wishing them well.
The UAE’s active engagement in the Asian Youth Games reflects its dedication to fostering young talent, promoting sports excellence, and enhancing international sporting relationships. The continued support from leadership encourages young athletes to aim for high standards and achieve remarkable success on a continental level.
