Train Derails In St. Catharines, Ont., CN Railway Investigating

A freight train derailment in St. Catharines has prompted an investigation by CN Railway after multiple railcars left the tracks on Monday morning. The incident took place near Glendale Avenue and Keele Street, causing concern in the area and disrupting transportation services.

According to officials, a total of 13 railcars were involved in the derailment. Emergency crews, including railway staff and local first responders, quickly reached the scene to assess the situation and begin recovery operations. Authorities confirmed that there were no injuries or fires reported, which helped prevent the situation from becoming more serious.

Images from the site showed several overturned railcars, with a white, grain-like material spilled onto the ground. CN Railway later identified the substance as polyethylene, a commonly used material in the production of household plastics. Officials reassured the public that the material is non-hazardous and does not pose any health or environmental risk.

While the exact cause of the derailment remains unknown, an investigation is currently underway. CN Railway stated that its teams are working to determine what led to the incident and to restore normal rail operations as soon as possible.

The derailment also had a direct impact on public transportation in the region. Metrolinx announced that GO train services were suspended between Confederation GO Station and Niagara Falls GO Station due to the freight train issue. This disruption affected commuters travelling through the corridor, including those using the St. Catharines GO station.

Passengers were advised to use alternative travel options, including GO bus services connecting to Burlington GO Station. However, transit officials warned that bus capacity is limited and encouraged people to avoid non-essential travel until services are fully restored.

The incident also briefly affected marine traffic along the nearby Welland Canal. The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation reported minor delays as the rail bridge near one of the canal locks was impacted. Officials later indicated that vessel movement would gradually return to normal as conditions improved.
