On May 30, amidst his State visit, General Secretary and President To Lam of Vietnam engaged in a ceremonial tree planting at the esteemed Singapore Botanic Gardens, accompanied by Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. This event served as a symbol of the burgeoning friendship and collaboration between these two nations in Southeast Asia.

The gathering was attended by high-ranking officials and delegates from both countries. Prior to the planting of the commemorative tree, both leaders received insights about the Hopea recopei tree species and the historical importance of the planting site within the verdant gardens.

This tree-planting initiative underscores the mutual commitment of Vietnam and Singapore to environmental sustainability and the importance of ecological preservation. It further represents the unwavering diplomatic relations bolstered by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.

Nestled in the core of Singapore, the Singapore Botanic Gardens stands as a cherished landmark, since its inception in 1859, has greatly contributed to botanical research, plant conservation, and agricultural advancements across Southeast Asia for over a century.

Globally acknowledged for its scientific merit and scenic beauty, it became the first tropical botanical garden to be recognized on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015. Today, it continues to be a significant attraction, central to tropical plant studies.

A highlight of this botanical haven is the National Orchid Garden, showcasing the largest global collection of tropical orchids. Since the 1920s, Singapore has been at the forefront of orchid cultivation and hybridization, establishing itself as a leader in horticultural advancements.

The ceremony also brought forth Singapore’s enduring dedication to environmental preservation. Its modern greening initiative can be traced back to 1963, instigated by founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, which successfully transformed the nation into a ‘City in Nature,’ even amid its status as one of the most densely populated countries worldwide.
