In Thailand, the Ministry of Interior, alongside UN-Habitat, is intensifying efforts to localize Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with an emphasis on creating greener urban areas and enhancing life quality for all residents.
During a recent meeting at the Ministry, officials underscored the effectiveness of the “Waste Bank” initiative as a major success story of community-oriented sustainability programs in action.
Senior representatives reviewed past collaborations and discussed strategies for future sustainable urban growth during these discussions.
Deputy Permanent Secretary Chaiwat Chuenkosum emphasized the ministry's dedication to operationalizing all 17 SDGs at the local level, ensuring equitable development for every community.
He pointed out that Thailand's sustainability framework includes urban planning, eco-friendly city initiatives, public space enhancements, and better housing standards through projects like “Blueprint for the People.”
A central element of this cooperation is the Waste Bank project, which employs circular economy principles and the 3R model—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle—to enhance waste management while fostering community involvement.
Currently, waste banks operate in all 878 districts of Thailand, with over 8.7 thousand locations and more than 3.5 million registered members nationwide.
This initiative complements the national “Clean Province” program, where provincial leaders coordinate waste management efforts across various regions.
Thailand is advancing its partnership with UN-Habitat and UNDP on a Local Finance Accelerator project to bolster climate-resilient development in pilot provinces like Surat Thani and Khon Kaen.
Recognized for its strides in sustainable urban development, Thailand has been invited by UN-Habitat to join the World Urban Forum in 2028 and is considering hosting the forum in 2030.
The Interior Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to continued international collaboration focused on constructing sustainable cities, effective environmental management, and enriching public well-being.
