To uphold students’ educational rights, Thailand’s Ministry of Education has introduced vital initiatives while gearing up for tech-driven learning expansions. This comes after the Cabinet's acknowledgment of the National Human Rights Commission’s recommendations urging schools to provide academic records to students with outstanding tuition fees.
Education Minister Prasert Chantarawong emphasized that institutions under the Office of the Basic Education Commission are prohibited from denying graduating students their official academic records, asserting that access to education is enshrined in the constitution. The ministry guarantees that all students will acquire the necessary documentation for university applications and future academic pursuits, irrespective of any unpaid fees.
The minister cautioned that withholding essential certificates could hinder students' enrollment in the 2026 academic year's initial semester, potentially escalating dropout rates. To counter this, the ministry intends to implement explicit nationwide directives ensuring school adherence to this policy while promoting the “Zero Dropout” initiative, designed to keep students engaged in the educational ecosystem.
Officials mentioned that educational establishments should collaborate with families to devise financial solutions instead of obstructing students' pathways to higher education. The government views the safeguarding of educational access as crucial for enhancing equity and fostering long-term national progress.
In parallel to the educational rights agenda, Prime Ministerial orders have tasked the Ministry of Education to collaborate with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, and the Ministry of Labour on a significant national artificial intelligence development blueprint.
A segment of a 200 billion baht budget will be allocated to bolster AI skills and technological prowess among students and the populace throughout Thailand. Officials indicated that such investment aims to equip the workforce for upcoming industries and boost the nation's positioning in the global digital marketplace.
Minister Prasert asserted that embracing artificial intelligence has become a national imperative, poised to enhance the capabilities of Thai citizens in forthcoming years. The ministry is crafting a strategic plan focused on enhancing digital infrastructure, modernizing educational curricula, and equipping both teachers and students to navigate the fast-evolving technological landscape.
