A Texas woman was sentenced to five years in prison for attempting to drown a 3-year-old Palestinian-American Muslim girl in May 2024, in an incident authorities said was racially motivated.
Elizabeth Wolf, 43, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and injury to a child. Judge Andy Porter handed down the sentence after Wolf waived her right to a jury trial. The attack prompted national attention and condemnation from then-President Joe Biden.
The incident occurred at an apartment complex swimming pool in Euless, Texas. Police said Wolf confronted the mother of the 3-year-old and her 6-year-old son, asking where they were from. Wolf then attempted to drown the younger child and tried to grab the older sibling. The mother intervened, and both children were medically cleared after emergency responders arrived.
Rising Concerns Over Bias-Motivated Violence
Human rights advocates have raised alarms over increasing threats against American Muslims, Arabs, and Jews following the 2023 Israel-Hamas conflict and Israel’s subsequent military actions in Gaza.
Other recent incidents include the fatal stabbing of a 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy in Illinois, attacks on Palestinian-Americans in Texas, and violent confrontations against pro-Palestinian protesters in California. Additional attacks have targeted Israeli citizens and Jewish communities across the U.S., highlighting growing concerns over antisemitism and anti-Muslim sentiment.
