Vietnam and South Korea Enhance Defence Relations

In a significant meeting held in Hanoi, Vietnam and South Korea have emphasized their dedication to enhancing bilateral defence collaboration and broadening cooperation in several domains. This latest dialogue highlights the vital role of their comprehensive strategic partnership, a relationship that has seen notable advancements in recent years.

On June 2, 2026, General Phan Van Giang, who serves as Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence, welcomed South Korean Ambassador Choi Young Sam at the Ministry of National Defense in Hanoi. This meeting also marked the ambassador’s farewell as he concluded his diplomatic mission in Vietnam.

During the session, General Phan Van Giang congratulated Ambassador Choi on the successful conclusion of his tenure and recognized his significant role in fortifying the Vietnam-South Korea relationship. The General acknowledged the ambassador's efforts to foster partnerships across various sectors, including defence, trade, cultural exchanges, and enhancing interpersonal interactions.

The Defence Minister reaffirmed Vietnam’s unwavering commitment to the comprehensive strategic partnership, stressing the importance of recent high-level visits. Notably, he referenced the state visit made by Vietnamese leader To Lam to South Korea in August 2025 and the reciprocal visit by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to Vietnam in April 2026, both of which yielded substantial progress in bilateral relations.

Reflecting on defence collaboration, General Phan Van Giang remarked on the steady growth of cooperation between the countries. He outlined key areas such as military training, naval interactions, defence industry development, and initiatives for post-war recovery. He expressed gratitude for South Korea’s ongoing assistance in managing war consequences in Vietnam through various humanitarian projects.

Particular emphasis was placed on mine-action projects led by South Korea, especially in Binh Dinh and Quang Binh provinces. The Defence Minister thanked the South Korean government for their help and expressed hopes for ongoing cooperation in recovery efforts. He also invited South Korean defence industries to join the upcoming Third Vietnam International Defense Exhibition, scheduled for December 2026.

Ambassador Choi Young Sam expressed his appreciation to Vietnamese officials for their support during his time in Vietnam and conveyed satisfaction with the evolution of bilateral relations. He highlighted improvements in collaboration through policy dialogues, officer exchanges, naval visits, economic partnerships, and cultural programs. Pledging his continued support in future roles, he underscored his commitment to enhancing the Vietnam-South Korea relationship.
