Sri Lanka’s Dunith Wellalage Learns of Father’s Death After Asia Cup Match

Post by : Sean Carter

Cricket often gives moments of joy and pride, but sometimes life brings sudden sorrow that overshadows victory. This was the reality for young Sri Lankan cricketer Dunith Wellalage, who learned of his father’s death just after helping his team defeat Afghanistan in their final Asia Cup 2025 Group B match at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The 22-year-old spinner, who faced a tough time in the match after being hit for five sixes in an over by Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi, did not know that his family was going through a tragedy at the same moment. His father, Suranga Wellalage, had passed away due to a sudden heart attack.

The heartbreaking news was delivered to Dunith by Sri Lanka’s head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and the team manager. Cameras later showed Jayasuriya, a legendary former cricketer himself, placing his arm around the young player’s shoulder and consoling him as teammates stood by quietly.

A Bittersweet Victory

Sri Lanka’s win over Afghanistan was convincing and secured their place in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup. But the celebrations quickly turned into silence as the news of Suranga’s passing spread.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer and commentator Russell Arnold shared the sad news live on television, reminding viewers that Suranga was also a respected figure in Sri Lankan school cricket.

“Dunith Wellalage’s father, Suranga, passed away just a while ago. He also played cricket and even captained Prince of Wales College when I was captain of St. Peter’s,” Arnold said during commentary on Sony Sports Network.

Arnold added that such moments show the human side of cricket, where behind every performance there are personal stories and struggles.

A Father’s Legacy

Suranga Wellalage was not only Dunith’s father but also a former school-level cricketer who inspired his son to take up the sport. Those who knew him described him as passionate about the game and proud of his son’s progress from school cricket to the international stage.

For Dunith, who is just starting his professional journey, the loss of his father at such a young age is deeply painful. Yet, his father’s influence on his career and his love for cricket will continue to live through him.

Team Support in Difficult Times

In moments of personal tragedy, sports teams often act as extended families. The Sri Lankan dressing room is known for its close bonds, and senior players immediately rallied around Dunith after the match. Coach Sanath Jayasuriya’s comforting presence symbolized the unity within the squad.

Russell Arnold also noted this closeness while speaking on air: “The celebrations will be muted. The team is a tight place, the dressing room. Hopefully, this bonds them and helps them go on and do well in the Super Four stage.”

A Reminder of Life Beyond Sport

Cricket fans across the world often see players only as athletes on the field. But this incident is a reminder that cricketers are human beings first, with families, emotions, and personal challenges. Dunith’s grief shows how sport and life can sometimes collide in difficult ways.

The coming days will be hard for him as he tries to balance his professional duties with personal loss. But with the support of his teammates, coaches, and fans, Dunith will carry his father’s memory forward every time he steps onto the field.
