More than 150 unvaccinated schoolchildren in South Carolina are being quarantined for 21 days after exposure to measles, state officials confirmed. The affected students, who lack immunizations, will miss school for the duration of potential disease transmission.
South Carolina joins other US states in experiencing a surge in measles cases. So far this year, the United States has confirmed 1,563 cases—the highest nationwide in more than 30 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The quarantined students are from two Spartanburg County schools: Global Academy of South Carolina, which serves primary-age children, and Fairforest Elementary, serving both primary and secondary students.
New Confirmed Cases Raise Alarm
The South Carolina Department of Public Health reported its eighth confirmed measles case in two weeks on Thursday in Greenville County. Officials stressed that the new case indicates active, unrecognized community transmission in the region, making vaccination more important than ever.
“The public must ensure they have received their measles vaccinations,” the department said.
MMR Vaccine: Effective Protection
The MMR vaccine is highly effective against measles, mumps, and rubella, with a 97% success rate. Measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, brain swelling, and death.
Rising Cases Across the US and Canada
Measles cases are also rising in Utah and Arizona, where 55 and 63 cases have been reported, respectively. Earlier outbreaks in West Texas and New Mexico infected hundreds and caused three deaths—the first in the US since 2015. A majority of these cases involved unvaccinated individuals.
Across the border, Canada has reported 5,024 measles cases this year, particularly in Alberta and Ontario—more than three times the US total, despite a smaller population. This rapid spread has raised concerns about containment measures.
Global Resurgence
UNICEF reports that measles cases are spiking globally, with outbreaks recorded in over 100 countries over the past five years. Public health experts continue to stress vaccination as the most effective means of protection.
