In a stunning turn of events at the Shanghai Masters, Monaco’s Valentin Vacherot, ranked 204th in the world, defeated injury-hit Novak Djokovic 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-finals. The victory makes Vacherot the lowest-ranked ATP Masters 1000 finalist in history.

The 26-year-old qualifier will face either his cousin, unseeded Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech, or reigning champion Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s final.

“Is This Real?” – Vacherot Reflects on Historic Win

“I’m trying to pinch myself, is this real?” Vacherot said after his victory. “To have Novak on the other side of the court was, first of all, an invaluable experience for me. I have a hundred feelings right now.”

Vacherot’s win marks a remarkable rise in his career, as he previously ensured his entry into the top 100 for the first time by defeating Holger Rune in the quarter-finals. Following his Shanghai performance, he climbed 146 spots to world number 58 in the live ATP rankings.

Djokovic Struggles With Injury

Djokovic, 38, has been battling injury throughout the tournament. The Serb experienced severe physical issues in previous matches, including vomiting due to the heat and humidity. These problems resurfaced during the semi-final, forcing him to receive medical treatment multiple times.

In the seventh game of the first set, Djokovic took an extended medical break, lying on his stomach shirtless as a physiotherapist treated his back. He received further treatment during the set break but continued to play. Despite visibly struggling, Djokovic briefly raised hopes among the Shanghai crowd when he moved into a 4-3 lead in the second set.

However, Vacherot quickly regained control, winning three consecutive games to secure the historic win.

Djokovic Congratulates Rising Star

Following the match, Djokovic praised Vacherot’s performance. “I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters final. Going from qualifications, it’s an amazing story. I told him at the net that he’s had an amazing tournament, but more so, his attitude is very good, and his game was amazing as well. So it’s all about him. I wish him all the best in the finals, and the better player won today.”

Vacherot’s remarkable run at the Shanghai Masters highlights the unpredictable nature of tennis, proving that qualifiers can challenge even the sport’s legends on the biggest stages.
