A wave of grief has struck a family in Gujjarwal village, Punjab, after learning that their daughter, Mandeep Kaur, who had moved to Canada to build a future, was allegedly murdered. The family was first told she had died in a road accident weeks ago.
Canadian authorities later informed them that Gurjot Singh Khaira, the younger brother of Mandeep’s husband, has been arrested. Gurjot faces charges of second-degree murder and indignity to human remains, following an initial charge only related to mishandling the body.
Mandeep, who moved to Canada six years ago as an international student, had married a Lodhiwal-based family member seven months ago. Her father, Jagdev Singh Jaggie, expressed shock, saying he never suspected danger and was informed of the alleged accident two days after it occurred.
The family was told about the upgraded murder charge only after Jagdev returned from immersing his daughter’s ashes in holy waters. Mandeep’s mother, Jaswinder Kaur, remains heartbroken and seeks answers about her daughter’s death. Jagdev Singh Jaggie plans to return to Canada to pursue justice for Mandeep.
