Ex-Fugees Star Pras Michel Receives 14-Year Sentence for Illegal Campaign Funding

Prakazrel “Pras” Michel, a Grammy-winning artist renowned for his work with the Fugees, has been sentenced to 14 years behind bars for unlawfully directing millions of dollars from foreign sources to support Barack Obama’s re-election bid in 2012.

The sentencing was delivered on Thursday by U.S. District Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly in Washington, D.C. During the hearing, Michel, aged 52, chose not to make a statement.

This verdict follows a jury's conviction in April 2023 on 10 charges, including conspiracy and serving as an unregistered agent for a foreign government. Prosecutors revealed that Michel had acquired over $120 million from Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, popularly known as Jho Low, and funneled part of those funds through intermediaries into Obama’s campaign.

Low is closely linked to the 1MDB scandal, one of the most extensive financial fraud cases in history, in which billions were diverted from Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund. Several Malaysian officials have faced convictions in relation to this scandal, including former Prime Minister Najib Razak, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2022, a sentence that was later reduced.

Court filings indicated that Michel “lied unapologetically and unrelentingly” to push his agenda, illegally funneling foreign funds into a U.S. presidential election. U.S. law prohibits non-citizens from contributing to electoral campaigns or compensating others for such contributions.

Prosecutors stated, “Prakazrel Michel betrayed his nation for monetary gain. He funneled millions in unlawful foreign contributions into a U.S. presidential election and sought to influence a sitting president on behalf of a foreign criminal and power.”

Michel’s conduct went further than just the illegal donations. The prosecution noted his attempts to obstruct the Justice Department’s investigation into Low and the 1MDB scandal, tampering with witnesses, and committing perjury during his trial. While federal guidelines suggested a life sentence, Judge Kollar-Kotelly opted for 14 years, citing the “broad range of his crimes, disregard for national security, and extent of his greed.”

Defense attorneys argued that Michel's role was overstated, claiming that Low’s contributions stemmed from a desire for personal recognition rather than influence over policy. They contended that Low simply sought a photo with then-President Obama and added that they would appeal the ruling, terming the 14-year sentence “drastically disproportionate” and advocating for a three-year term instead.

Jho Low remains elusive, infamously known for his extravagant lifestyle and ties to Hollywood, including funding the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Both DiCaprio and former Attorney General Jeff Sessions provided testimonies during Michel’s trial.

Once celebrated for his role in the Fugees alongside Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean, where the group garnered two Grammys and sold millions of records, Michel’s fall from grace illustrates a stark transformation from musical renown to being incarcerated for political and financial offenses.
