Post by : Mina Carter

Ontario’s minimum wage has increased to $17.60 per hour, up 40 cents from the previous rate, affecting approximately 800,000 workers across the province. The 2.4% annualized increase is based on the Ontario Consumer Price Index, the government said.

Comparison with Other Rates

The increase makes Ontario’s minimum wage the second-highest in Canada. The student minimum wage will now be $16.60 per hour, while employees doing paid work in their own homes – such as sewing or answering calls for a call centre – will earn $19.35 per hour.

Who Is Affected

According to the province, about 36% of workers earning minimum wage or less are employed in retail, and 23% work in accommodation and food services.

Minimum Wage Increases in Other Provinces

Ontario is not alone in raising minimum wages this week. Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island are also implementing increases effective today.

Government Statement

The government emphasized that these changes are part of ongoing efforts to adjust wages in line with inflation and support workers in sectors with lower pay.
