Thompson Hospital Faces Grey Listing Vote by Nurses

Post by : Mina Carter

Nurses at Thompson General Hospital, located in northern Manitoba, are currently casting votes to determine if the hospital should be included on a "grey list." This potential action, as reported by the Manitoba Nurses Union (MNU), aims to deter prospective employees due to ongoing safety concerns. Online voting is taking place from Wednesday through Friday.

Union president Darlene Jackson indicated that if the grey listing is approved, specific recommendations will be generated for the hospital. This step provides the facility with a chance to rectify the prevailing issues prior to being declared unsafe.

"Our nurses are expressing that the risk of violence is escalating, making the workplace increasingly hazardous each day," Jackson stated.

This vote is prompted by multiple safety incidents, such as a patient stabbing incident in late September and a visitor who barricaded himself with a firearm in the hospital chapel last December.

The hospital is also grappling with staffing shortages, which exacerbate safety risks. Jackson highlighted a vacancy rate exceeding 30% in the obstetrics unit, with similar shortages in the emergency services. Nurses are reportedly feeling overwhelmed and responsible for maintaining patient safety in light of inadequate staffing.

The union aims for the grey listing vote to act as an imperative for improving work conditions. Jackson warned that without substantial changes, vacancies may increase and jeopardize patient care.

The Northern Regional Health Authority responded by outlining measures to enhance safety, such as employing new security guards and establishing a regional security officer position. Enhanced monitoring and secure hospital access are anticipated to commence in December.

Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara confirmed plans to hire eight institutional safety officers for Thompson Hospital. He recognized the persistent challenges within northern healthcare while asserting that the government is attentive to nurses' concerns and is dedicated to fostering better safety and security.

This vote at Thompson follows a similar grey listing event at Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre, where 94% of nurses voted to discourage new hires until their working conditions improve.
