A tragic shooting incident took place at the famous Teotihuacan pyramids in Mexico, where an armed man opened fire on tourists, killing one Canadian visitor and injuring several others. The attack happened on April 21, 2026, at one of the country’s most popular historical sites.

Authorities confirmed that the gunman climbed to the top of the Pyramid of the Moon and began shooting while tourists were present. The incident occurred before noon, a time when the site usually sees a large number of visitors.

According to officials, at least 13 people were injured in the attack, including tourists from different countries such as the United States, Colombia, Brazil, and Russia. Some victims suffered gunshot wounds, while others were hurt during the panic as people tried to escape. Emergency services quickly responded and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

The attacker later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Security personnel recovered weapons from the scene, including a firearm, a knife, and ammunition. Police and National Guard units were deployed to control the situation and secure the area.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand expressed condolences, confirming that one Canadian citizen was killed and another was injured. She extended support to the victims’ families during this difficult time. Similarly, Claudia Sheinbaum said the incident was deeply painful and assured that a full investigation would be conducted.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as gunshots rang out. Some tourists lay flat on the ground to avoid being hit, while others rushed down the pyramid steps in fear. A tour guide present at the site said many people tried to hide or escape as quickly as possible.

The Teotihuacan site, located near Mexico City, is one of the country’s most visited tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors each year. Known for its ancient pyramids and cultural significance, the site is usually considered safe for tourists.

Authorities are now reviewing security measures at the location, as reports suggest that routine security checks may not have been in place at the time of the incident. Investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the attack.

This incident has raised concerns about tourist safety at major heritage sites, while officials continue efforts to support victims and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
