Mexico is grappling with severe flooding and landslides after tropical storms Priscilla and Raymond, which have claimed at least 44 lives, the government confirmed.
The storms hit five states hardest: Veracruz reported 18 deaths, Hidalgo 16, Puebla 9, and Queretaro 1. Several towns have been left stranded, with homes and roads submerged in waist-high floodwaters.
President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration activated an emergency response plan to assist 139 affected towns. She stated on social media platform X, “We continue with attention to the emergency in Veracruz, Hidalgo, Puebla, Queretaro, and San Luis Potosí, in coordination with state governors and federal authorities. The National Emergency Committee is in permanent session.”
Images from the Mexican military show soldiers evacuating residents on life rafts while rescue teams provide aid to families trapped by floods and mudslides. Authorities have urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain alert and follow evacuation orders.
Emergency services are working with local and federal agencies to provide shelter, food, and medical aid. Officials also warned that heavy rains may persist, increasing the risk of further flooding and landslides. Citizens have been advised to stay cautious and monitor weather updates closely.
The government’s swift action highlights the scale of the disaster and the ongoing need for coordinated relief efforts as communities work to recover from the storms’ devastating impact.
