Melania Trump Backs foster Care Reform In Congress

Post by : Sophia Matthew

Melania Trump has stepped forward to support new foster care legislation in the United States Congress, calling it a “moral imperative” to improve the lives of vulnerable children. Speaking at a key meeting with lawmakers, she emphasized the urgent need for stronger policies that address the real challenges faced by children in the foster care system.

The First Lady joined members of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee on April 15, 2026, where discussions focused on advancing legislation aimed at protecting and empowering foster care youth. During her remarks, she highlighted that children should not just be seen as dependents, but as equals who deserve dignity, opportunity, and care.

Melania Trump stressed that foster care reform must go beyond awareness and move toward concrete action. She pointed out several key issues affecting foster children, including housing instability, lack of educational support, financial difficulties, transportation challenges, and limited access to technology. According to her, these barriers often prevent children from achieving long-term success and stability.

The initiative builds on her earlier efforts, including the “Fostering the Future” program launched in 2021 under her BE BEST campaign. This initiative aims to provide young people from foster care backgrounds with access to university-level education, particularly in technology fields, helping them prepare for entry-level jobs and financial independence.

Currently, the program is active across more than 20 universities in the United States, including Vanderbilt University, University of Miami, Louisiana State University, University of Virginia, University of Texas, Ohio State University, and University of Alabama. Despite these efforts, she noted that only about three percent of foster care youth earned a college degree in 2025, showing the need for stronger systemic support.

She also referred to the recently enacted TAKE IT DOWN Act and the “Fostering the Future” Executive Order as steps in the right direction, but made it clear that legislation passed by Congress can create more lasting and impactful change.

In her closing remarks, Melania Trump urged lawmakers to act decisively, stating that new legislation can transform lives and ensure that opportunities for foster care children are not just hopeful ideas, but guaranteed rights. The proposed reforms are expected to focus on long-term solutions that improve education access, stability, and overall well-being for children in the foster care system.
