Kerala Welcomes Late Arrival of Southwest Monsoon

Post by : Shakul

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has officially confirmed that the southwest monsoon has reached Kerala, marking the start of a crucial rainy season for the country. This year’s onset occurred on June 4, which is three days behind the standard date of June 1 and later than the initial projections.

Following the monsoon’s arrival, regions in Kerala have experienced significant rainfall, prompting the IMD to issue orange alerts in multiple districts. These alerts warn residents of the potential for heavy rains and associated disruptions.

Meteorologists have indicated that favorable atmospheric conditions have facilitated the monsoon's progression into Kerala, Lakshadweep, parts of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, along with areas in the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal. Weather experts predict that this rain system will continue to move northward, bringing precipitation to other regions of the country.

Heavy rainfall has already impacted daily activities in several areas. In Idukki district, an under-construction multi-storey structure collapsed due to the adverse conditions; thankfully, there were no reported injuries. Authorities remain vigilant, monitoring vulnerable locations as rainfall intensity rises.

The arrival of the monsoon is vital for India’s agricultural sector, which depends heavily on this seasonal rainfall for crop production. Farmers, water managers, and policymakers are closely watching the monsoon’s development, as it plays a crucial role in food security, reservoir levels, rural income, and overall economic health.

Weather alerts have also been issued for various other regions of the country. Anticipated weather includes thunderstorms, lightning, strong winds, and heavy rain in Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and other states. Meanwhile, light rain in Delhi has provided some relief from recent heat and humidity.

The IMD forecasts that seasonal rainfall in 2026 is expected to be around normal levels even with the delayed start. Residents in areas receiving weather alerts are encouraged to keep abreast of updates and take appropriate precautions as the monsoon season intensifies in the upcoming weeks.
