External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday met US ambassador-designate Sergio Gor in New Delhi, as India-US relations continue to face strains following Washington’s imposition of steep tariffs on Indian exports.
Gor, accompanied by Deputy Secretary for Management and Resources Michael J Rigas, is on a six-day visit to New Delhi. His visit comes days after the US Senate confirmed his appointment as the American envoy to India.
"Pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi. Discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance," Jaishankar said on social media, adding, "Wish him the best for his new responsibility."
The bilateral ties have been under stress after President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on Indian goods to 50%, including an additional 25% duty on India’s purchase of Russian crude oil. India described the move as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”
Despite the tensions, recent phone conversations between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump have raised hopes for a positive resolution in ongoing trade negotiations. India and the US recently resumed talks on a trade deal after a short pause.
Gor, a former White House personnel director and a close associate of President Trump, was nominated as the US envoy to India in August. He expressed gratitude for the nomination, calling it a mark of “incredible trust and confidence.”
American officials noted that Gor will not present his credentials as the US ambassador during this visit.
