Israel Strikes Southern Lebanon Despite Trump’s Effort to Shore Up Ceasefire

Israel has carried out a new series of airstrikes across southern Lebanon despite ongoing diplomatic efforts led by US President Donald Trump to strengthen a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The attacks have renewed concerns that the fragile truce could collapse and lead to a wider conflict in the region. Reports from Lebanon indicated that multiple locations in the country's south were targeted, with several people killed and others injured in the latest wave of violence.

The strikes came only days after Trump announced that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to reduce hostilities through indirect negotiations. According to the proposed arrangement, Israel would avoid major attacks on Beirut and its southern suburbs, while Hezbollah would halt rocket and drone attacks against Israeli territory. The agreement was viewed as an important step toward reducing tensions after months of fighting.

However, despite the diplomatic breakthrough, fighting has continued on the ground. Lebanese state media reported that Israeli forces struck around 30 locations across southern Lebanon. Several of the attacks reportedly hit civilian areas, including locations near Tyre and Sidon. In one of the deadliest incidents, members of the same family were among those killed. Lebanese authorities have condemned the attacks and called for international pressure to stop the violence.

Israel has defended its military actions by accusing Hezbollah of violating ceasefire understandings through rocket launches, drone operations, and attacks on Israeli troops operating near the border. Israeli military officials said they intercepted hostile aircraft believed to have crossed from Lebanon into northern Israel. The government maintains that it will continue targeting what it describes as Hezbollah military infrastructure whenever security threats emerge.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, has denied targeting Israeli civilians and says its operations are directed at Israeli military positions inside Lebanese territory. The Iran-backed group has insisted that any lasting peace agreement must include a complete halt to Israeli military operations throughout Lebanon rather than a limited arrangement focused only on Beirut.

The continued violence highlights the challenges facing Trump's ceasefire initiative. While the US administration has been trying to prevent a broader regional war and encourage negotiations, both sides remain deeply divided over security demands, military presence, and the future role of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Diplomatic talks involving American, Israeli, and Lebanese officials are continuing, but progress remains uncertain.

Analysts warn that the latest strikes could undermine efforts to stabilize the region at a time when tensions are already high due to the broader confrontation involving Israel, Iran, and Iranian-backed groups across the Middle East. The conflict has displaced large numbers of civilians, damaged infrastructure, and increased fears that further escalation could draw additional countries into the crisis.

For now, the ceasefire remains fragile. Although diplomatic channels remain open, the continued exchange of attacks demonstrates how quickly the situation can deteriorate. International observers are closely watching developments to see whether negotiations can restore calm or whether the region is heading toward another dangerous phase of conflict.
