Iranian FM Araghchi Heads To Pakistan As Diplomatic Push For US Talks Intensifies

Abbas Araghchi, the Foreign Minister of Iran, is heading to Islamabad in a key diplomatic move aimed at reviving talks with the United States. The visit comes at a time of rising tensions in the region, with Pakistan stepping forward as an important mediator between Washington and Tehran.

Before his visit, Araghchi held separate phone conversations with Ishaq Dar and Asim Munir. These discussions focused on the current regional situation, the ongoing ceasefire, and efforts to restart negotiations between the US and Iran. Officials from both sides described the talks as constructive and emphasised the importance of continued dialogue.

Araghchi is expected to arrive in Islamabad with a small delegation for meetings with Pakistan’s political and military leadership. While early reports suggested that the visit could lead directly to a second round of US-Iran talks, Iranian officials have described it as part of a broader diplomatic tour that also includes visits to Oman and Russia. This indicates that Iran is taking a careful and strategic approach while keeping communication channels open.

One of the main issues blocking further talks is the naval blockade imposed by the United States on Iranian ports. Iran has made it clear that lifting this blockade is a key condition for returning to negotiations. However, the US has not agreed to this demand so far, creating a major obstacle to progress.

Pakistan has been actively working to reduce tensions and bring both sides back to the negotiating table. Officials in Islamabad believe that recent diplomatic efforts could lead to a breakthrough. Reports suggest that preparations are underway for a possible second round of talks, with logistical arrangements already being made in the capital. However, there has been no official confirmation regarding the timing or participation of a US delegation.

The current conflict began on February 28, when the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting nuclear facilities and other locations. Iran responded with retaliatory attacks, leading to a wider regional crisis. Since then, tensions have remained high, affecting global energy supply routes, especially through the strategic 

A temporary ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan on April 8, which allowed for initial direct talks between the US and Iran on April 11–12. These discussions were significant, as they marked the highest-level engagement between the two countries in decades. However, key disagreements prevented a final agreement.

Overall, Araghchi’s visit highlights ongoing diplomatic efforts to stabilise the region and restart meaningful dialogue. While challenges remain, especially regarding the naval blockade and broader political demands, Pakistan’s mediation role could prove crucial in shaping the next phase of US-Iran relations.
