UK and GCC Forge Landmark Trade Agreement Worth $5 Billion Annually

The United Kingdom has finalized a landmark trade agreement with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), anticipated to boost trade by approximately $5 billion annually in the longer term.

The GCC comprises six Gulf nations: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that the agreement aims to bolster economic ties between the UK and the Gulf region, opening new trade and investment avenues.

According to the UK government, this deal is projected to yield around £3.7 billion (AED 18.21 billion) each year over time. This marks a significant increase from the previously estimated £1.6 billion, thanks to expanded trade liberalization and stronger commitments in the services sector.

The agreement will see 93% of GCC tariffs on British products eliminated. The UK forecasts a reduction in tariffs worth approximately £580 million by the tenth year, with nearly two-thirds of these being removed immediately upon implementation.

Various British sectors, including automotive, aerospace, electronics, and food and beverage, are anticipated to benefit significantly. Items like cereals, cheddar cheese, chocolate, and butter will become free from tariffs within GCC markets.

In exchange, Britain has eased tariffs on GCC imports, though most oil and gas exports from Gulf nations already entered the UK tariff-free.

The agreement places a strong emphasis on the services sector. British firms will retain access to GCC markets without additional restrictions, while Gulf states will find enhanced opportunities to grow their own service industries.

The UK government assured that the deal will uphold British environmental and data protection standards and does not include any human rights clauses.

Trade Minister Peter Kyle referred to this agreement as a considerable signal of confidence amid global uncertainty, highlighting that the UK is the first G7 nation to sign a modern trade agreement with the GCC bloc.
