Record 777 Firefighters Deployed by EU to Combat Wildfire Risks

Post by : Bianca Hayes

In a significant move, the European Union has launched its largest wildfire preparation initiative, dispatching 777 firefighters from 14 diverse European nations to assist areas facing heightened wildfire threats during the upcoming 2025 season.

Under the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, these firefighters have been strategically stationed in high-risk spots across Cyprus, Greece, Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal. The European Commission noted that this is the highest participant level recorded since the initiation of the pre-positioning programme in 2022.

To bolster emergency response measures, the EU has also placed 22 firefighting aircraft and five helicopters on immediate standby. These aerial assets are integral to the EU fleet and can be quickly mobilized to assist nations grappling with severe wildfire incidents.

Recognizing the escalating severity and duration of wildfire seasons across Europe, the European Commission emphasized that these additional resources aim to effectively support national firefighting units during peak wildfire risks.

During the wildfire season, the EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre will function continuously to assess wildfire threats, manage support operations, and guide deployment strategies. The centre will incorporate meteorological data and scientific assessments to enhance response effectiveness.

Monitoring efforts will be augmented with the involvement of wildfire specialists from EU member states and involved nations, along with experts collaborating through the Commission's alliances with scientific bodies.

Looking ahead, the EU intends to establish a new regional firefighting station in Cyprus by 2026, aimed at further strengthening wildfire preparedness and emergency responses throughout Europe and the South Mediterranean region.

These recent initiatives underline the EU's ongoing commitment to fostering collaboration, enhancing readiness, and ensuring quick response mechanisms as wildfire threats intensify across the continent.
