Eddie Murphy, the legendary performer with a career that has spanned close to fifty years, is slated to receive the prestigious American Film Institute's Life Achievement Award. The AFI trustees have confirmed that the award ceremony will take place during a glamorous gala at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 18.

Kathleen Kennedy, chair of AFI's board, remarked, “Eddie Murphy stands as a quintessential American icon.” She highlighted that his influence in film, television, and stand-up comedy has significantly shaped the industry, showcasing his immense talent.

At 64, Murphy skyrocketed to fame as a teenage stand-up comic and became a household name thanks to his stint on Saturday Night Live. He has since achieved monumental success at the box office with hits like Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, and the Shrek series. His illustrious career also earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for Dreamgirls, among other accolades including a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

In the Netflix documentary Being Eddie, Murphy shared his views on fame and awards, stating, “Winning is fantastic, but whether I win or not, I sleep just fine. I’ll still be Eddie every morning.”

Murphy also received the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2023 Golden Globes, where he delivered a brief yet poignant acceptance speech. He reflected on his experiences, saying, “In my youth, I took everything for granted. Now, I value each chance and moment that comes my way.”

AFI's Life Achievement Award ceremonies are celebrated for their star-studded attendance. Last year's event honored Francis Ford Coppola and featured distinguished figures such as Steven Spielberg, Robert De Niro, and Harrison Ford among the attendees. Murphy will become the 51st recipient of this esteemed award, which first honored John Ford in 1973. Recent recipients include Denzel Washington, Nicole Kidman, and Julie Andrews.
