Daily Bread Cuts Ties With Scarborough Food Bank After Police Report

Post by : Samiksha

Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank has decided to cut off one of its largest member agencies, Feed Scarborough, after uncovering financial discrepancies and reporting concerns to Toronto police. The decision means Feed Scarborough will no longer receive food deliveries or funding from Daily Bread once its membership agreement expires at the end of this month.

Daily Bread says the move followed an internal review that raised questions about whether grant funds were being used for their intended charitable purposes. While Daily Bread paused funding during its investigation, it continued supplying food to avoid disrupting services for residents in south Scarborough. However, after further review, the charity’s board voted not to renew Feed Scarborough’s membership.

The concerns include invoices submitted to support grant funding that vendors say do not exist, more than $100,000 in expense claims paid to Feed Scarborough’s founder and CEO that were allegedly self-approved, and the use of grant money to purchase food from a company linked to the CEO. None of the allegations have been proven in court, and no criminal charges have been laid.

Feed Scarborough founder and CEO Suman Roy has denied any wrongdoing, stating that all funds were used for charitable purposes and that no money was spent with vendors involved in conflicts of interest or for services not rendered. Roy said the organization has commissioned a third-party investigation and is confident the allegations will be proven unfounded.

Toronto police have confirmed they received a report from Daily Bread in November 2025 and that the matter is being reviewed by the Financial Crimes Unit. Feed Scarborough says it has not yet been contacted by police but will cooperate fully if required.

Feed Scarborough currently operates multiple food banks in the area and says it will continue at least some emergency food services independently if possible. Meanwhile, Soso World Ministries will take over the distribution of food previously supplied by Daily Bread to ensure Scarborough residents continue to receive support.

The situation has raised broader concerns within the food bank sector about transparency and accountability, with other organizations stressing the importance of maintaining public trust while continuing to meet rising community needs.
