World Bicycle Day, honored annually on June 3, was instituted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 following a proposal by Turkmenistan. This observance has evolved into a vital global occasion that promotes physical activity, environmental consciousness, and sustainable urban transit.
In France, the Turkmenistan Embassy spearheaded a significant cycling event in Paris, inviting diplomats, Turkmen community members, students, and local citizens. During the event, Ambassador M. Charyev reaffirmed that cycling embodies friendship, health, and environmental stewardship, providing a platform for diverse individuals to unite.
Georgia also witnessed jubilant celebrations, where a cycling tour was organized through the streets of Tbilisi and the historic Mtskheta. Attended by representatives from the Georgian National Cycling Federation, athletes, coaches, and local residents, this event also marked the upcoming 35th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s independence.
In Türkiye, the Embassy facilitated sporting events and a bike ride along a specially selected route near Ankara's Eymir Lake. This gathering attracted diplomats, students, media figures, cycling aficionados, and members of the Turkmen community. Organizers highlighted cycling's positive impact on public health and its role in fostering environmental sustainability.
Further cycling events occurred in Saudi Arabia, Kazakhstan, and Russia. In Riyadh, a mass ride brought together community members and residents, promoting healthy lifestyles and environmental responsibility. In Moscow, students, diplomats, and members of the Turkmen diaspora participated in a traditional bike ride that celebrated Turkmenistan's sports development and public health initiatives.
Authorities emphasized that cycling is gaining traction globally as a straightforward, cost-effective, and ecologically friendly transportation means. Through these events, Turkmenistan aims to enhance global recognition of sustainable development, inspire active lifestyles, and contribute significantly to international public health and environmental conservation efforts.
