A strong windstorm swept through Calgary on Friday, prompting Environment and Climate Change Canada to issue a wind warning for the city. Gusts of up to 90 km/h were recorded as the storm system moved through the region, causing widespread disruption and damage.
City officials reported a sharp rise in emergency calls related to fallen trees and branches. Overnight, about six incidents were recorded, but the number quickly increased to around 30 by the morning. Crews were deployed across affected areas to clear roads and ensure public safety, as several streets were blocked by debris.
In some parts of the city, strong winds brought down power lines, creating hazardous conditions. Utility provider ENMAX warned residents to stay away from any downed or damaged lines, noting that electricity can travel through objects in contact with them. Residents were advised to maintain a safe distance and report such hazards immediately.
The storm also caused property damage in residential areas. In the neighbourhood of Rundle, part of a house roof was torn off due to powerful gusts, while in another location, a large sign collapsed onto a parked vehicle. Flying debris, including branches and loose objects, added to the risks faced by residents.
Unusual incidents were also reported, including a trampoline being lifted into the air by strong winds and carried out of a yard. These events highlight the intensity of the storm and the dangers posed by unsecured outdoor items during extreme weather.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and secure loose objects around their homes. They also advised against attempting to remove fallen branches or trees that are in contact with power lines due to the risk of electric shock.
Insurance experts have noted that most home insurance policies typically cover wind-related damage, including harm caused by flying debris or fallen trees. However, coverage for vehicle damage depends on the type of insurance policy held.
Weather officials expect the wind conditions to gradually ease overnight, bringing some relief to residents. Until then, safety measures remain in place as crews continue to respond to incidents across the city.
