Rumen Radev Wins Bulgaria Election By Huge Margin

Former President Rumen Radev has secured a decisive victory in Bulgaria’s latest parliamentary election, marking a major political shift in the country. Preliminary results show his party, Progressive Bulgaria, winning a strong majority of votes, placing him in a position to form the next government.

The election, held on April 19, 2026, comes after a period of prolonged political instability in Bulgaria, where voters have gone to the polls multiple times in recent years. The latest vote was the eighth election in just five years, highlighting ongoing challenges in forming stable governments.

With more than 90 percent of ballots counted, Radev’s party secured around 44.7 percent of the vote, far ahead of rival groups. The pro-European We Continue the Change–Democratic Bulgaria alliance received just over 13 percent, while the once-dominant GERB party, led by former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov, trailed closely behind.

Speaking after the results, Radev described the outcome as a “victory of hope,” emphasizing the public’s desire for change and stability. Although his party appears strong enough to govern alone, he has not ruled out forming a coalition to ensure long-term political stability.

Borissov congratulated Radev on his win but warned that governing the country would be more challenging than winning the election. His remarks reflect broader concerns about Bulgaria’s recent history of short-lived governments and fragile coalitions.

Radev, known for his critical stance on corruption and his calls to reform governance, stepped down from the presidency earlier this year to contest the election. He has pledged to end what he describes as an “oligarchic governance model” and to bring stability to the political system.

The election also saw a relatively strong voter turnout, exceeding 50 percent, as authorities worked to address concerns over vote buying and electoral integrity. In the weeks leading up to the vote, police carried out raids and seized large sums of money linked to alleged election-related corruption.

Bulgaria, a member of the European Union since 2007, has faced ongoing political uncertainty in recent years. Radev’s victory is now being seen as a potential turning point, with expectations that his leadership could bring a more stable and consistent direction to the country’s governance.
