Chicago Bears coach Ben Johnson admitted he could have called even more running plays after his team beat the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles 24-15 on Friday. Despite calling 47 rushes — the most in a non-overtime game for the Bears in 30 years — Johnson said he wished he had leaned on the running game even more.
Running backs D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai had standout performances, each rushing for over 125 yards. This is the first time since 1985 that the Bears have had two players rush for at least 100 yards in the same game.
“That’s amazing,” Swift said. “The offensive line made it easy for us. Receivers and tight ends blocked downfield, and everything just clicked at the right time.”
The Bears’ offensive line was key to the win, opening strong running lanes all afternoon. Johnson praised his starting five, giving them a game ball for their effort. “We couldn’t have won without our line,” he said, naming players Ozzy Trapilo, Joe Thuney, Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson, and Darnell Wright.
Quarterback Caleb Williams faced tough conditions with strong wind, completing only 17 of 36 passes. His passer rating of 56.9 was the lowest in a Bears win since 2006. Still, receivers and tight ends played a big role by blocking effectively to support the running game.
The Bears’ first touchdown drive showcased their power running style. Swift scored on a 3-yard run after seven straight rushing plays. Later, Monangai took a handoff for a 31-yard gain, leading to another touchdown in a 12-play, 87-yard drive that put Chicago ahead 17-9.
The Bears finished with 280 rushing yards, the first time in a decade a team ran that much against the Eagles. They also set a league-high 17 first downs in the game, marking their second 280-yard rushing performance this season — something they hadn’t achieved since 1984.
Johnson said the Bears built the team to perform well in tough weather and outdoor games. With three more games at Soldier Field and one at Lambeau Field, he wants a strong running game to carry the team when conditions are challenging.
Williams also contributed with key passes, including a touchdown to tight end Cole Kmet and two crucial third- and fourth-down conversions. He celebrated each big run, cheering for his teammates.
With this win, the Bears not only improve their record but also send a strong message to the league. A powerful running game, smart play-calling, and strong teamwork allowed them to dominate one of the top teams in the NFC.
