A shooting incident in central Athens has left several people injured, with authorities searching for a suspect believed to be an elderly man. Police confirmed that a gunman opened fire at two separate locations on Tuesday, triggering panic and a major security response across the city.
According to officials, the suspect first targeted a social security office, where he fired a shotgun and injured an employee. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and provided first aid before transporting the injured person to hospital. The suspect then fled the area before police could apprehend him.
Authorities later reported that the same individual was involved in a second shooting at a courthouse in another part of central Athens. Several people were wounded in the attack, and video footage showed emergency crews rushing victims to ambulances outside the building.
Police recovered the weapon believed to have been used in the attacks and launched a large-scale manhunt. Greek media reports suggest the suspect is an 89-year-old man, though officials have not publicly confirmed full details about his identity.
Investigators are still working to determine the motive behind the shootings. Reports indicate that the suspect may have thrown documents at the courthouse scene, possibly to explain his actions, but this has not yet been officially verified.
Officials from the national social security authority, EFKA, said the attacker entered their office building, went to an upper floor, and opened fire after warning one employee to move aside. Another worker was struck in the leg during the incident.
Gun violence is relatively uncommon in Greece, where firearm ownership is strictly regulated. The incident has raised concerns about public safety, especially given the unusual profile of the suspect.
Police operations remain ongoing as authorities continue efforts to locate and arrest the gunman. Officials have urged the public to remain cautious and report any information that could help in the investigation.
