Alberta Orders Judge-Led Inquiry After Man Dies Waiting Nearly Eight Hours in ER

Alberta’s government has ordered a judge-led inquiry into the death of a 44-year-old man who died after waiting nearly eight hours for care in an Edmonton hospital emergency room, officials announced this week. The move comes amid growing concern over long wait times and overcrowding in the province’s health care system.

The man, identified as Prashanth Sreekumar, a father of three, was taken to Grey Nuns Community Hospital in southeast Edmonton on Dec. 22, 2025, after complaining of severe chest pain. Family members say he waited for hours in the emergency department waiting area before collapsing and dying of an apparent cardiac arrest before seeing a doctor.

In response to the tragedy, Alberta’s Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Matt Jones said a judge-led fatality inquiry will examine the circumstances of the man’s care and provide public findings and recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths in the future. The decision follows calls from the family and health care advocates for greater transparency and accountability.

Officials also outlined plans to introduce a new triage system in emergency departments in Edmonton and Calgary, intended to speed patient assessments. Under this approach, physicians and nurses will work together to start certain diagnostic and care processes for patients waiting in the ER, such as blood tests or imaging, to reduce delays before they are formally seen.

The province’s health system has come under increasing strain, with doctors and health care workers warning that overcapacity and long wait times in emergency rooms are contributing to inadequate care. Hospitals in major cities have reported occupancy rates exceeding 100 per cent, fueled by factors including seasonal surges in illness and limited hospital beds.

Sreekumar’s family has criticized the care he received and called for systemic changes, saying he was in severe pain and repeatedly sought help during the long wait. In public statements, they have urged officials to address structural issues in Alberta’s emergency health care system to prevent further loss of life.

The judge-led inquiry is expected to shed light on emergency room protocols, staffing and capacity challenges, offering recommendations that could influence future health policy decisions in the province.
