Samuel Bird Murder: Suspect Charged After Remains Found

Post by : Mina Carter

The remains of 14-year-old Samuel Bird have been located in a rural area outside Edmonton, ending a months-long search for the missing boy. His mother, Alanna Bird, confirmed the discovery on social media Thursday.

Arrest and Charges

Bryan Farrell, 38, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and interfering with a body in connection with Bird’s death. Farrell also faces 13 other charges, including:

  • Aggravated assault

  • Arson endangering life

  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm

  • Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon

  • Uttering threats

  • Fraud over $5,000

Police confirmed Farrell is the only person charged, and no further suspects are being sought.

Connection to Arson

Court records show Farrell’s arson charges involve the west Edmonton property Bird visited the night he disappeared. Police executed a search warrant on the house on Sept. 18, and the property caught fire less than two weeks later in a suspicious blaze.

Disappearance and Search Efforts

Bird, a member of Paul First Nation, went missing on June 1 after leaving his west Edmonton home to visit a friend. He was last seen on surveillance video around 8:30 p.m. walking through Holy Cross School grounds and later at a friend’s home in the area of 150th Street and 106th Avenue.

The disappearance triggered an extensive search involving family, volunteers, and search-and-rescue teams. Alanna Bird thanked everyone involved, including those who shared his missing posters and attended rallies.

Community Reaction

Tiera Williams, who helped organize search efforts, including a water search on the North Saskatchewan River, expressed deep sorrow and relief.

“It was five months of just praying every single day… Grateful that we found him, so grateful that he can be laid to rest. But it also comes with such sorrow because he’s a little boy, and it shouldn’t have happened.”

Detective Jared Buhler of the homicide section said:

“After a lengthy and complex investigation, we are pleased to be able to conclude this file and hopefully bring some measure of resolution and justice to Samuel’s loved ones, who have been searching tirelessly for him.”
